Things MLMers Need to Know on Social Media
FRIEND OR FOE?
“Everything in moderation, including moderation,” Benjamin Franklin
Moderation for a network marketer?
The passion networker’s share for their product and business model, regardless of the company virtually eliminates common sense.
Ah, we are a passionate but often irrational group…..and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
We are vital. Dreamers. Believers. Optimists.
I just can’t imagine thinking I had a good day because the traffic was a little lighter than normal. Can you imagine that being a ‘hope’ for your work week?
From as far back as Buddha to the Karate Kid we hear the work balance.
After a year of research leading to taking the plunge into the realm of social media, there is just no question that balance and common sense are required to avoid the trap.
The trap is the game where someone believes lots of activity will lead to a payoff that is record setting, life changing…..the ship is going to come in.
KEEP THESE 3 TRUTHS IN MIND TO ATTAIN BALANCE
1. Social Media will not build your business.
No, I am not old school or new school. Some pros call it “WasteBook” not face book.
And no, they aren’t old school. They just find their people spending more time on social media than talking to people.
Like 100% on social media and 0% talking to people.
Think of it this way:
- Plan, Product & Company = vehicle
- Upline, training & skills = GPS
- Names = fuel
- Driver = you
- Ignition and stepping on gas = talking to people
Social media can help fill your tank…….but if we don’t put our key in the ignition, turn it and step on the gas……nothing happens.
I like to ask people these 3 questions on my team that are out of balance with social media
- “How many people have met through social media have you sponsored that you didn’t talk to?’
- “How many people have you met through social media that didn’t pitch you on something?”
- “How many new people have you talked to this week?”
It’s usually 0-0-0 …..that is a problem.
Most people are honest and will confess, they are not getting the results……the ‘attraction marketing’ angle is frustrating for networkers.
I like to think of my business, the recruiting portion as a funnel…..I get names in, talk to them and the ones that agree to look are in the ‘pipeline’ of the funnel.
If we are going to make some money, we need to talk to people.
Communication lite will not build a business.
2. Don’t confuse activity with productivity
No one is afraid of the phone….it’s just one of two things that makes us go for our computer screen instead of the phone , usually both.
Your husband or wife takes a bad fall….you instantly reach for the phone and dial 911.
You know what to say and what the outcome of the call will be.
Network marketing, like any occupation, is skill based.
Fortunately the skills we need to learn are easy. Once we know what to say to get a ‘yes’ 80-90% of the time, the fear goes away.
Spending 3 hours on Facebook, Twitter etc. is activity, don’t confuse it with productivity.
Do the productivity part first, do social media later.
3. “Common sense isn’t so common,” Mark Twain
Unfortunately there are a lot of sharp marketers who know people don’t know what to say or do…..so promises of hundreds of credit card waving prospects, attracted to the ‘brand’ you can create….sounds really good…..and a lot better than rejection. I mean, really….we loved ‘Rocky’ because he took a beating and kept on ticking ….to victory…….but none of want to take the beatings that Rocky took….once you know a couple of easy-to-learn, easy-to-teach skills…..like any occupation, it gets better.
The common sense part…..if you had a way to generate leads, really good, ready-to-buy-ready-to-join leads…..would you put your team in competition with the world? Hardly.
Goodness of their heart? Tooth Fairy stuff.
Folks, it’s a hoax…..a little less passion, a little common sense and some balance ….and anyone can think of 10 reasons social media doesn’t build large network marketing organizations…..we simply know, all of us, that we can’t point-and-click our way to the top of the pay plan.
IT’S NOT ALL BAD
