Concerning success…..

I have one, you have one.
If you remove the first letter, a bit remains.
If you remove the second, bit still remains.
After much trying, you might be able to remove the third one also, but it remains.

What is it?

Here’s a hint: not only will it make or break us…It dies hard!


I never much liked the ‘funnie….comic strips… know, like Peanuts, Doonesbury, Lil’ Abner.  Never thought they were very funny.

I did love ‘The Far Side” by Gary Larsen.  But that was a panel, one drawing with a caption.

The strip Pogo, posted one of the most profound lessons of life for all of us and especially network & internet marketers.

The drawing was not really important, just the last caption.

We have seen the enemy, and it is us.”


I’ve said it before and am certain I will say it again in future blogs.  Nothing will foster more opportunity for personal growth than this crazy business.

In the end, after all the conference calls, webcasts, Super Saturdays, Conventions……it’s you and the phone, in your office.  And you pick it up or you don’t.

Now we can bullshit ourselves about

  • Getting Organized
  • Setting up our contact manager
  • Getting everything sync’d
  • Building our list
  • Prioritizing our list
  • Researching the product/service so we can answer questions
  • Studying the marketing plan
  • Etc…….

But…..there comes a point when we, sitting there, realize we are either going to pick up the phone or not.  Personal growth, the environment for personal growth expands to the max right at that moment.  It is moment that is magnificent…..stunning.   And it occurs over and over again until we quit or pick-up the phone.


There is a clear and simple pattern that emerges with both winners and with losers.

Lombardi said, “Winning is a habit, unfortunately, so is losing.”

Winners like my friend John Cini, a million dollar earner plus, does not win every battle… one does.  What he does do is win the war with himself.

How?  He takes personal responsibility and makes the calls.  John is not John’s enemy.  After earning over a million bucks with NuSkin he stepped into a different realm in networking, sort of a hybrid of MLM and within 90 days got to $30,000 in a month.   Once he realized the company was not what he hoped it would be in terms of delivering on promised technology he sucked it up and bit the bullet.

Here is the winning pattern.

John joins another company after 30 days [not 30 weeks] of research.  He gets on the phone with top earners with that company including another friend of mine, Jim Bartlett.  Finds out what the top earners are doing and does it.

John and I got caught up yesterday and he’s sponsored in a $32,000 a month earner and bringing on another million dollar plus earner this weekend.

What John did.

  • Talked to top earners – IN HIS NEW COMPANY
  • Pick a pin level and date
  • Wrote out a Plan
  • Built a list
  • Got the people on the phone with top earners
  • Got people on the phone with his upline
  • Repeated the last 2 points over and over and over

What John did NOT do.

  • Surf the internet
  • Evaluate different magic systems on the internet
  • Buy crap from gurus
  • Get organized
  • Re-arrange the stuff in his office
  • Buy a course on Branding himself
  • Buy a course on listening
  • Study “how to courses”

Winners know what winners do.  They find out what works from people who are succeeding at specifically what they want to win at and then do it over and over and over again.

They take responsibility and a huge piece of that is…….drum roll please….. action.


People do not plan to fail, they simply fail to plan is something we have all heard.

What does it mean? Really.

Fun huh?

Come on, don’t cheat and look at the next line…..these are known as ‘wuzzles’ and I love them.  It actually says something and make a point.

OK… more suspense…..

It means ‘the difference between knowing and doing’  …..see it?

The difference between knowing what to do and doing it is whether or not we schedule it.

When we couple that with this axiom, ‘If it isn’t written, it isn’t true.’ we are on the winner’s pattern and defeating, daily, the enemy…..which is us.

The inter-webbie thing.

All the experts…..all the gurus……all the get rich quick stuff.

Jim? Passes all this crap.  Winner

John?  Passes all this stuff.  Winner

But what if……the gal or guy asks…..there is something out there that will make me rich?

That is a question that smacks of irresponsibility.


This is the pattern of the person who is going to personify the expression….

Getting ready to get ready

People getting ready to get ready have a pattern….by seeking outside advice from people who have ZERO financial interest in their success so …….are planning to never pick up the phone….they are looking for a system that will allow them to ‘go swimming without getting wet‘ …..and folks, I am here to tell you…..keep looking and you’ll find guru after guru after expert after expert who will sell you exactly that……a system that will get 10, 20, 30 new reps a month…..even a week…..and we’ll NEVER have to talk to anyone……of course the ONLY thing that will work is you … pay off another credit card charge that promises “waterless swimming”.

People hitting pin levels ……. talk to the winners in their upline and pick up the phone.

Pretty simple pattern all these winners have.

  1. They learn what to do – Three Step Plan
  2. They learn what to say – It’s a simple skill
  3. They write out a plan
  4. They get on the phone and execute the plan

So what is your pattern……everybody knows people tend to do what is familiar, what is comfortable and what they are used to doing under stress……

Everybody says opportunities for personal growth, while exhilarating, can be stressful…….

And, when it comes to the phone…..where the rubber meets the road so to speak……stress, growth, glory, failure, heroics, avoidance, action and bullshitting ourselves are all options …but most people tend to make the same choice over and over and over……it’s a habit, just like Lombardi said.
